The King of England went to visit the newly-completed St. Paul’s Cathedral in London 3 centuries ago, and remarked to Sir Christopher Wren, the architect, that it was “the most awful, artificial, and amusing structure” he had ever seen. Rather than take umbrage, Wren was highly complimented, because in 18th century England awful meant awe-inspiring or awesome, artificial meant artistic or artifact, and amusing meant amazing.
